As a remote, in-house Staff Attorney or Senior Staff Attorney for The Hartford, you will join a collaborative, team-oriented contemporary work environment that includes a strong focus on work-life balance. This individual shall litigate cases throughout Southern California, primarily in the Inland Empire area which includes Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The Attorney will collaborate extensively with our claim partners and insureds to deliver the best possible result in pending litigation. They will be part of a unique team responsible for providing top quality representation of The Hartford and its insureds on litigated matters including general liability, commercial and personal automobile accidents, premises liability, products liability and construction site accidents. The selected Attorney will independently handle cases from inception through trial.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analyze intricate substantive and procedural legal and factual issues, conduct extensive, well-reasoned legal research, independently develop and present defense strategies on behalf of clients
  • Prepare pleadings, written discovery, motions, and briefs in support of defense strategies with limited supervision due to expected level of experience and expertise
  • Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice, and other services to clients and claim customers in a technology-driven environment
  • Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co-counsel in a manner consistent with established office procedures
  • Effectuate the prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assigned cases.
  • Independently conduct all aspects of litigation including trials, depositions, arbitration, and meditations

Qualifications:

Note- This position may be filled as a Senior or Staff Attorney commensurate with a candidate’s experience. Qualified Senior Staff Attorney candidates will possess the following requirements:

  • Minimum of 7 years of legal practice experience handling tort defense cases
  • First chair jury trial expertise is highly-preferred
  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize duties and time are a must
  • Strong communication, computer and technological skills (proficiency in MS Office, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook; and Lexis Nexis) and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required
  • Member in good standing of California State Bar
  • JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the State of California

Qualified Staff Attorney candidates will possess the following requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 years of legal practice experience handling tort defense cases
  • Some trial experience is preferred
  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize duties and time are a must
  • Strong communication, computer and technological skills (proficiency in MS Office, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook; and Lexis Nexis) and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required
  • Member in good standing of California State Bar
  • JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the State of California

  • The selected candidate shall work remotely and travel to appearances in the greater Inland Empire area and possibly throughout the state ad hoc, so residence in or in close proximity to Riverside County or San Bernardino County is required.

Compensation:

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is: $116,240 – $174,360
